A comparison of trends in COVID-19 infections and mortality in Italy and New York City, before and after the implementation of mandatory face mask use, suggests that this measure prevented more than 70,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than 66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9, suggesting that airborne transmission may play a major role in COVID-19 spread.
